PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel wrestling team earned a 20-12 victory over Maryland on Senior Night at the Daskalakis Athletic Center on Saturday night. The Dragons won six of the 10 matches on their way to their 12th dual meet victory of the season. Seniors No. 11 Kevin Devoy Jr. and No. 18 Matthew Cimato secured wins in their last career appearances on their home mat.
Maryland started things off with a win in the 125 match, as Michael Beck defeated Tanner Shoap by a 6-2 decision. Devoy came out next and secured a 6-1 victory over the Terps' Billy Rappo to even the score at 3-3. In the 141 match, Ryan Diehl took a 6-1 decision from David Pearce to put Maryland ahead again, 6-3.
Cimato gave the Dragons' their first lead of the night with a 10-1 major decision over Maryland's Adam Whitesell. Although Justin Alexander took a win in the 157 match to put the Terps up again halfway through the dual, the Dragons would take the next four matches to go ahead, 20-9. Austin Rose defeated Patrick Gerish at 165, 3-1 and then Ebed Jarrell followed with a 14-2 major decision over Josh Ugalde in the 174 match. Alex Deciantis was able to edge Idris White, 2-1 at 184 and then in exciting fashion Joshua Murphy battled David-Brian Whisler to the second set of tiebreakers and walked away with a 6-3 victory.
No. 17 Joey Goodhart also took his opponent to overtime in the heavyweight match, but dropped a 4-2 decision as Maryland's Youssif Hemida secured a takedown in sudden victory. The late effort from the Terps was not enough to overcome the deficit the Dragons had created. Drexel was able to walk away with a 20-12 victory and has now secured wins in five of its last six outings.
With the win, the Dragons improve to 12-6 overall and remain 7-3 against EIWA opponents. Maryland moves to 2-16 on the season and are 0-9 against Big Ten opponents.
Drexel returns to action tomorrow, when it will close out the regular season with a dual down 33rd Street at Penn. The Dragons and Quakers will battle for ownership of the Abner's Cheesesteak Trophy with matches beginning at 1 p.m. at the Palestra.
