No. 14 Women’s Squash Suffers 5-4 Loss to No. 9 Dartmouth in Kurtz Cup Finals

PRINCETON, N.J. – The No. 14 Drexel women's squash team (8-11) advanced to Sunday's Kurtz Cup finals for the second-straight year but could not come away with the 'B' Division Championship as the Dragons suffered a close 5-4 loss to No. 9 Dartmouth in Princeton, N.J. to close the team's season.

Drexel defeated No. 11 Williams on Friday in the quarterfinals, 5-4, before edging out No. 10 Brown in the semifinals, 5-4, to earn its way to the Kurtz Cup finals. The Dragons faced a similar path last year as they defeated Brown in the semis before losing to Dartmouth in the finals up in New Haven, Conn.

On Sunday, Drexel trailed in the match 4-3 with two matches in progress. Junior Hayley Hughes was up 2-0 in her match while senior Mary Fung-A-Fat went to a fifth from the No. 4 spot. Hughes held on for the win but Dartmouth's Rebecca Brownell came back from two down to defeat Fung-A-Fat and clinch the cup for the Big Green.

The top third of Drexel's ladder all won their matches, going 3-0 each over the tournament. Sisters Hayley and Anna Hughes swept their matches from the No. 1 and 3 positions while junior Ryan Morgan came back to win hers in five, 11-13, 11-4, 11-5, 6-11, 11-7.

Sophomore Fiona Power also turned in a No. 5 position win over Zainab Molani of the Big Green to go undefeated in the Kurtz Cup, 11-6, 7-11, 11-8, 11-5.

Select Dragons will now prepare for the individual championships from Friday, March 3 through Sunday, March 5 in Hanover, N.H. to close the 2016-17 campaign.
