PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel rowing team placed four boats in the top five, including one women's boat, Saturday at the 35th annual Murphy Cup Regatta hosted by Temple on the Schuylkill River.
The Dragons advanced four boats – the men's varsity eight, men's second varsity eight A, women's freshmen eight and men's third varsity eight A – into the top finals as well as three to the petite finals – the women's varsity eight, women's second varsity eight and men's second varsity eight B. Taking home Drexel's top finish was the men's second varsity eight A, which finished third in its grand final.
Drexel's men's varsity eight A, racing in the Lois Krall boat, came away with a third-place finish with a time of 5:51.99, more than five seconds behind the winner, Delaware. Both the men's varsity eight and the men's third varsity eight finished A fourth overall in their grand finals. The men's varsity eight, racing in the Sandra Lee Sheller II boat, took fourth with a time of 5:51.58, just over a tenth of a second behind Holy Cross for third and about nine seconds off Saint Joseph's for the top spot. The men's third varsity eight A, in the Annette Pennoni boat, took fourth with a time of 6:08.95, which was about 10 seconds off the pace set by the host, Temple. The Dragons' women's freshmen eight recorded a fifth-place finish to round out the Drexel boats in the top five. In the Marlene Buckley boat, the freshmen eight rowed to a 7:29.86, as Northeastern dominated the field.
The Dragons also sent three boats to petite finals on the day, picking up three more top 10 finishes. The women's varsity eight, racing in the Cara Fry boat, won its petite final with a time of 6:53.85 to outlast second-place George Washington by less than a second. The men's second varsity eight B, in the Joseph Greipp boat, also picked up a victory in its petite final with a time of 5:52.45 to pace the rest of the field by more than 10 seconds. Also recording a top-10 finish was the women's second varsity eight B, which crossed the finish line in fourth in the petite final with a time of 6:45.90 in the Maria Papadakis boat.
See below for the full Drexel results.
Coming up next, the women's crew will again meet up with Temple when the two Philadelphia schools row against Duquesne on the Schuylkill on April 1. Both teams rejoin when they head to our nation's capital for the George Washington Invitational on the Potomac River.
