TOWSON, Md. – The Drexel women's tennis team dropped a hard-fought regular season finale Friday afternoon at Towson, 4-3. Despite the loss, the Dragons made history, as Lea Winkler won her 62nd career singles match, breaking the record of 61 held by Rebecca Murphy since 1995.
The Dragons will head into next week's Colonial Athletic Association Championships with a record of 15-8 (2-3 CAA). The Tigers improve to 12-9 (3-4 CAA) on the year.
It was a tight match that could have swung either way, but in the end it was the doubles point that made the difference for the Tigers. The Dragons got a 7-5 victory at No. 3 from Honami Yazawa and Winkler, but could not pull out the tiebreak at No. 2, thus yielding the point to Towson. In singles, the Dragons faced an uphill battled, needing to win four of six matches to take the overall match, and they gave the Tigers their best shot. Yazawa came away with a 7-6 (5), 6-4 in the top spot over Nicole Shakhnazarova. At No. 3, Kendra Bunch fought back from a set down to beat A.J. Gomer in three, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5, while Winkler powered past Barbora Vasilkova in the fourth spot, 6-1, 7-5, for her historic win to break the 22-year-old program record. The Dragons would force three sets in two of their three singles losses, but could not break through as Towson finished off the victory with a split of the singles matches.
Drexel's men will conclude their regular season Saturday afternoon when they host the James Madison Dukes at Vidas Courts. Click here for more.
The Dragons return to action at the CAA Championships hosted by Elon, beginning on Thursday.
