PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel women's rowing team won the Lela H. Kerr Cup on Saturday at the Kerr Cup Regatta on the Schuylkill River to bring the trophy back to Drexel after spending a year across town. The regatta, which was hosted in conjunction with Drexel Alumni, is named in honor of Dr. Thomas Kerr, the founding coach of Drexel Crew and former team physician.
The Dragons' men's varsity eight won its seventh Dr. Thomas Kerr Cup in a row, while the women's varsity eight won the Lela H. Kerr Cup for the sixth time in eight years. The men's varsity eight, racing in the Lois Krall II boat, raced to a convincing win with a time of 5:55.86, nearly four seconds ahead of Saint Joseph's. The women's varsity eight, racing in the Cara Fry, fended off a charging Temple crew with a time of 6:58.37, a second and a half ahead of the Owls.
Drexel's men's freshmen eight won gold by open water, racing in the Joseph Greipp boat to a time of 6:27.24 to best second-place Delaware by nearly seven seconds. The Dragons' success in the men's eights continued with the third varsity eight's gold in the Lois Krall boat with a time of 6:25.39 by nearly six seconds.
Also garnering top three finishes were the women's second varsity eight, women's varsity four, men's varsity four and women's freshmen eight. The second varsity eight took second in the Marlene Buckley II boat with a time of 7:09.62, more than three seconds off of Fordham's pace. The women's varsity four, racing in the Sandra Lee Sheller boat, comfortably took second with a time of 7:52.58 while Lafayette ran away with the race. Drexel's top men's four, racing in the brand new Bella Santorum boat, grabbed second in a tight race with a time of 7:09.93, holding off Army West Point by just over a quarter of a second and finishing behind Fordham by about four and a half seconds.
The Dragons put three more into the top five – the men's second varsity eight, women's pair and men's second varsity four. Drexel second men's eight took fifth in the grand final with a time of 6:29.13 in the Sandra Lee Sheller II boat. The pair, in its first competitive action of the year, earned a fourth-place time of 9:54.08, while the men's second four also took fourth with a final time of 7:35.63.
Next weekend, the Dragons will reconvene on the Schuylkill on Saturday, April 22 for the city championships at the Bergen Cup and Kelly Cup hosted by Saint Joseph's.
History & Origins
The Kerr Cup Regatta was established by Drexel University Alumni in 1967 to honor former Drexel Crew Coach, Dr. Thomas Kerr, Jr. Dr. Kerr passed away in 1988 at the age of 78. Dr. Kerr is credited with starting the Drexel crew program in 1957, serving as coach until 1968. He also served as the crew's team physician and surgeon. He competed in the 1932 Olympics in the four-oared boat and was a member of the national champion eight-oared Shell-Penn A.C. in 1931.
The winners of the men's varsity eight race will be awarded the Dr. Thomas Kerr Cup. The winners of the women's varsity eight race will be awarded the Lela H. Kerr Cup named in honor of Dr. Kerr's wife.
