
Men's Varsity 8 Finishes 19th in the Country at IRA National Championships

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Drexel men's varsity eight finished 19th overall in the country Sunday, highlighting the Dragons' weekend at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championships on Lake Natoma in Sacramento, Calif.
The finish of 19th overall for the Dragons' top boat marks its best finish at IRAs since it finished 17th overall in 2012. The Dragons raced to a time of 5:48.900 in the third final. Drexel's third varsity eight finished 18th overall, crossing the finish line in the third final in 6:17.683. The Dragons' second varsity eight won the fourth final to finish 19th in the country with a time of 5:56.934, to outlast second-place FIT by three-tenths of a second. The varsity four finished second to Gonzaga in the fourth final to finish 20th overall.
On Day 2, the men's varsity eight raced to a time of 5:52.272, finishing third of five, to move into Sunday's third final and ensuring the boat a top 19 finish. The second varsity eight finished fourth of six with a time of 6:04.414 for a middle lane in Sunday's fourth final. The third varsity eight earned a spot in Sunday's third final with a time of 6:12.2984 for third of four in the semifinals. The varsity four will race against Gonzaga in the fourth final on Sunday.
On Day 1, Drexel's varsity eight, racing in the Lois Krall II boat, finished its heat in fifth of six with a time of 5:57.405 before third of four in reps with a nearly identical time of 5:57.337. The Dragons' top eight will head to the semifinals on Saturday at 12:45 p.m. (EST) in lane two. Racing in the Sandra Lee Sheller II boat, the second varsity eight took fifth of six with a time of 6:04.314 in its heat before rowing to a 6:18.120, good for third of four in reps. The Dragons' second eight will move into Saturday's semifinals slated for 1:25 p.m. (EST) in lane five.
The Dragons' third varsity eight, competing in the Lois Krall boat, finished its heat fifth of five with a time of 6:24.296 before crossing the finish line in reps at 6:28.081, good for fifth of sixth. The three-V will move into Saturday's semifinals at 2:15 p.m. (EST) in lane three. Closing out both the heats and reps was the varsity four, racing in the Bella Santorum boat. The four clocked a 7:04.794 to finish sixth in heats before finishing third of four with a time of 7:06.755 in reps. It will next race in Saturday's semifinal at 2:55 p.m. (EST) in lane one.
