RICHMOND, Va. - Drexel senior Tanja Kirmse earned her first career weekly Colonial Athletic Association award on Wednesday as the league named her its Women's Swimmer of the Week. The freestyle specialist captured three individual titles and helped a relay team to a second place finish as part of the Dragons' 161-119 victory at Delaware on Saturday afternoon.
Kirmse won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 53.30. After taking that shorter race, she pulled away for a win in the 500-free with a 5:06.95. Kirmse finished her individual program with her most impressive performance, swimming a 2:07.98 in the 200-IM that stands as the eighth-best time in the event in program history. She also swam a leg on the Dragons' second-place 400-free relay team.
The weekly award was the first for Kirmse and the second weekly honor for the women's swimming team. Alexa Kutch was named the CAA's Women's Swimmer of the Week on Dec. 6.
Kirmse and the Dragons will return to the pool for their final home meet of the 2017-18 season when they host Seton Hall and Towson on Saturday. The meet gets underway at 11 a.m., and will include the team's annual senior day ceremony honoring Kirmse and the seven other seniors on the men's and women's teams.
