PHILADELPHIA - A history-making season came to an end on Sunday as the Drexel women's basketball team fell to Fordham in the second round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament, 63-60. The Dragons end their season 27-8 overall, coming up one win shy of matching the program's record for single-season victories.
Bailey Greenberg matched her career high with 20 points in the loss, going 8-for-14 from the floor and 3-for-4 from long range. She added six rebounds. Aubree Brown scored 14, eight of which came in the fourth quarter as she tried to lead the Dragons back from a five-point deficit. She also had seven assists.
Kelsi Lidge finished her collegiate career with seven points, three assists and two steals before fouling out in the fourth quarter. Lidge finishes with 188 career steals, 10th-most on Drexel's all-time list. Megan Marecic added four points and two steals in the final appearance of her senior year. Meanwhile, freshman Hannah Nihill scored seven with two helpers in 38 minutes of action, and Niki Metzel added six off the bench. Tereza Kracikova scored two to round out the Dragons' scoring.
Drexel did not trail at any point in the first half, taking an 8-6 lead in a low-scoring first quarter and pushing the lead to as much as nine in the second. The Dragons led 26-17 with 1:18 to play before halftime, but a 5-0 spurt by the Rams made it just a four-point game at intermission.
The third quarter was when the Rams made their move. Still down by six with 6:33 to go in the third, Fordham opened a 9-0 run to take a 39-36 lead by the 2:15 mark. Though the Dragons would tie it up twice in the fourth quarter, they would never lead again.
The Dragons finish the year 27-8 overall, a .771 winning percentage that stands as the best in program history. The win total came one short of the program record of 28 set during the 2012-13 season, which culminated with a WNIT championship. Drexel also finished with a program-best 16 home victories this year, going 16-2 overall at the John A. Daskalakis Athletic Center.
