PHILADELPHIA - Head coach Doug Hess has announced that Sam Lane, who spent last season as a volunteer assistant on the Drexel men's soccer coaching staff, will join the staff full-time as an Assistant Coach for the upcoming 2018 season.
"We are excited to add Sam to our staff in a full-time capacity," head coach Doug Hess said. "I have been impressed with his work-ethic and commitment over the past year; and more than that, I am looking forward to his involvement in our off-campus recruiting efforts. He's a good young coach with a strong desire to learn and develop who has shown a high acumen for knowing our recruiting market, as well as the prospects beyond our region."
Lane, a local native and graduate of Franklin & Marshall College, has a year of experience with the Dragons after two seasons on the staff at Sewanee: The University of the South. As an assistant coach there, Lane helped the Tigers to their first-ever berth in the Southern Athletic Association championship game in 2015. He mentored five All-SAA performers and 20 SAA All-Academic selections during his two years at Sewanee as the team finished with the highest GPA of all male teams at the school in both of his seasons there. He also took on significant responsibilities in recruiting, scouting, training and social media.
In addition to his responsibilities at Sewanee, Lane remained active at his alma mater, Franklin & Marshall, where he helped scout NCAA Tournament opponents for the Diplomats following the conclusion of Sewanee's season in 2016. Lane created scouting reports on three opponents for F&M as it advanced to the NCAA Division III quarterfinals.
Lane earned a bachelor's degree in American Studies and American Civilization at Franklin & Marshall, where he helped the men's soccer team to a 55-15-5 record over his four-year playing career. That included the program's first-ever Centennial Conference title in 2013, a season which also saw the Diplomats reach the NCAA quarterfinals. The Diplomats also reached the third round of the tournament the following season. A two-time All-Centennial Conference choice including a First Team selection as a senior, Lane finished his career with 18 goals and 16 assists.
"I would like to thank Doug Hess, Nick Gannon and Dr. Zillmer for allowing me to continue to work at Drexel on a full time basis," Lane said. "Drexel is a fantastic institution that allows our student-athletes to succeed both on and off the field. I look forward to being a member of the Drexel community as well as learning from Doug Hess and the rest of the staff."
