WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – With high winds creating waters too choppy for racing, the IRA National Championships could not race a full schedule Sunday at Mercer Lake. Racing was suspended and later canceled before the Drexel men's varsity four had the chance to race for a national title in the grand final.
Organizers inverted and condensed the schedule in anticipation for the inclement weather, but the competition could not outrace Mother Nature in the end. Before racing was called, Yale won the coveted men's varsity eight national championship. Washington was awarded the overall points title.
The Dragons sent the Bella Santorum boat into the weekend manned with coxswain Hunter Reed, stroke Lazar Lazovic, 3-seat Justin Best, 2-seat Doug Davis and bow Dario Vracevic. On Day 2 Saturday, the Dragons raced to a winning time of 6:31.910 to outlast second-place Boston by more than six seconds. Holy Cross also advanced to the grand final after finishing third by less than three-tenths of a second over Georgetown. The Dragons finished with the third fastest time overall in the semifinals. Only Washington (6:26.013) and California (6:27.943) were faster.
On Day 1 Friday, the Dragons raced to a winning 6:27.888 to hold off second-place Georgetown by more than six seconds. Brown finished third followed by Northeastern and Cornell. Drexel's time was the second fastest of the 22 boats across four heats. Only Washington rowed to a faster time (6:26.658).
