JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - Drexel junior Connor Schmidt fired a final round 65 to win the 2018 Pennsylvania Amateur presented by LECOM. Schmidt had six birdies in his final 10 holes to become the first Dragon to win the tournament. The victory at Sunnehanna Country Club was just the latest outstanding performance for Schmidt. His torrid summer included a runner-up finish at the Western Pennsylvania Open a few weeks ago and was topped off with this win on Wednesday. Schmidt was one of three Drexel players to finish in the top 20.
Schmidt started the tournament with a three-under-par 67 before shooting a 71 during the second round. His final round didn't start off well as the Venetia, Pa. native had bogeys on two of the first four holes. Schmidt turned it around on the par-five ninth hole. On that hole, Schmidt left his approach shot within 10 feet and made his birdie putt. It was the first of three straight birdies for Schmidt. After making par on the 427-yard 12th hole, Schmidt went on another birdie run with three in the next four holes. His birdie on the 16th hole gave him the lead and a pair of pars on the final two homes earned him the victory. His 203 over 54 holes was two shots better than Anthony Sebastianelli who finished at 205.
Schmidt's teammates also had a good tournament at the Amateur. Michael Cook, who teamed up with Schmidt to win the Pennsylvania Golf Association's Four-Ball Championship in 2017, had his best tournament of the summer. The senior from Berwyn fired a three-over-par 213 and tied for 15th place. Rising junior Alex Butler, from East Norriton, tied for 18th, just one shot behind Cook.
