RICHMOND, Va. - Drexel freshman Chris Donovan became the second Dragon in two weeks to earn a Colonial Athletic Association weekly award as the forward was named the league's Co-Rookie of the Week on Monday afternoon. Donovan earned his honor after a three-point game in the Dragons' win over George Mason on Friday night, including the first collegiate goal of his career. Donovan shares this week's award with Cesar Cruz of UNCW.
Donovan, the 2018 Gatorade Player of the Year in Pennsylvania, has wasted no time making an impact on the Dragons. On Friday, he netted his first collegiate goal just 12:06 into the action against George Mason. He took a pass from Kwesi Allen, at the time the reigning CAA Player of the Week, and finished from seven yards in front of the goal. The score would stand up as the eventual game-winner as fellow rookie Stephen Kopsachilis recorded his first shutout with the Dragons, but Donovan added an assist later in the game to make it a 3-0 contest in the 65th minute when sophomore Patrick Murphy netted his first goal as a Dragon.
The rookie out of Paoli, Pa. has played a significant role in Drexel's hot start to the season. Donovan now has four points on the year, including an assist in the season-opening win over Binghamton, leaving him just one behind the team leaders. Drexel sits at 3-0-0 for the first time since 2010, with an opportunity to extend that mark to 4-0-0 on Monday night when it visits Penn for the annual University City Derby. Kick off for the Derby is set for 7 p.m.
