MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Drexel wrestling program sent brothers Michael (174, freshman) and Sean O'Malley (heavyweight, sophomore) to the "Shorty" Hitchcock Memorial Classic on Saturday, Jan. 12 at the Pucillo Gymnasium on the campus of Millersville University. Freshman Michael O'Malley wrestled at 174 pounds, taking second place in the division.
Michael O'Malley recorded a first round pin of Jordan Richard in his quarterfinals bout in just over a minute (1:11). The freshman then faced Sham Abdulrazzaq of the US Military Academy in the semifinals. O'Malley was credited with takedowns in the first and second periods to take a 4-2 edge on Abdulrazzaq. In the third round, the freshman earned an escape, a takedown and the riding time point to win the 8-2 decision.
Those two wins set O'Malley up for a finals matchup against Bucknell's Frankie Guida. After a scoreless first period, Guida took a 2-1 lead in the second behind a takedown as O'Malley earned an escape. O'Malley evened it up early in the third round with an escape but a takedown gave Guida a two-point lead as he already had an edge on riding time. The freshman broke free for a late escape but the riding time point gave Guida the 5-3 decision as O'Malley finished runner up in the 174 pound division.
