Women's Basketball Stays Perfect on the Road with 61-49 Win at Hofstra

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The Drexel women's basketball team led from start to finish on Sunday afternoon on Long Island as the Dragons won their third straight, 61-49 at Hofstra. Drexel (11-5, 3-2) got one of its most complete offensive efforts of the season, with a season-high five players scoring eight or more.
Bailey Greenberg led the balanced attack for the Dragons, finishing with 13 points to go along with seven rebounds, three assists and two steals. Hannah Nihill scored 12, going 2-for-2 from long range and dishing out a pair of assists. It was her first game scoring in double figures since Dec. 16 against Gardner-Webb. Aubree Brown, held off the scoreboard on Friday night at Northeastern, responded with 10 points. She also had four assists, leaving her tied with Marisa Crane for 10th on the Dragons' all-time list with 308 in her career. Keishana Washington knocked down a pair of threes on her way to eight points, and Mariah Leonard matched a career high with eight on a perfect 4-for-4 shooting afternoon.
Maura Hendrixson knocked down a pair of three-pointers for six total points in her second consecutive start. Ana Ferariu added two points with four assists and a steal. Niki Metzel scored two with six boards and two steals and a block.
As usual, it was the defense carrying the day early for the Dragons, who held a slim lead throughout the first quarter. Drexel began to extend its lead early in the second quarter with a 9-0 run that turned an 11-10 edge into a 20-10 cushion. It began with a three-pointer for Hannah Nihill. Two quick scores by Aubree Brown down low led to a Hofstra timeout, but Mariah Leonard capped the run after the break with a short jumper that had the Dragons doubling up the Pride with 5:53 to go before halftime.
The Dragons never saw their lead dip into single digits again the rest of the way. A 10-2 run midway through the third, highlighted by threes from Greenberg and Washington, stretched the Dragons' lead from 35-24 to 45-26 and, though the Pride would make a late push to cut the lead back down to 10 with just over a minute to go in the fourth quarter, essentially put the game out of reach.
The win improved the Dragons to a perfect 7-0 on the road this season. Drexel had never started a year better than 4-0 in true road games prior to this year. The Dragons also pushed their winning streak over the Pride to three, winning in Hempstead for a second consecutive season after losing six of their previous seven on Long Island.
The Dragons will be back in action this Friday at the Daskalakis Athletic Center when they open a home weekend against the College of Charleston. That game tips off at 7 p.m. Drexel will also take on UNCW on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the DAC.
