Women's Basketball Comes Up Short vs. JMU, 51-35
1/6/2019 4:35:00 PM | Women's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel women's basketball team ran out of gas on Sunday afternoon as the Dragons fell at home to James Madison, 51-35. The Dragons led for most of the first three quarters, but stalled offensively at the end of the third quarter and could not recover as they dropped to 8-5 overall and 0-2 in Colonial Athletic Association play.
Bailey Greenberg led all scorers with 17 points. Niki Metzel scored 11 on 5-of-8 shooting, adding nine rebounds as she came up just shy of her second double-double of the season. That duo carried the load offensively, with Keishana Washington, Hannah Nihill and Ana Ferariu each adding two points and Aubree Brown netting one. Brown's four assists led the way, while Washington, Nihill and Ferariu added two apiece.
The Dragons started well, scoring the game's first six points and leading throughout the first quarter. Down 8-2 midway through the period, James Madison came alive late in the quarter and trailed by just two, 12-10, after the first. The Dukes briefly took the lead in a back-and-forth second quarter, but Greenberg responded with a three-pointer and Washington drove in on a breakaway for two to make it 23-19. It was 24-21 Dragons at the break.
Drexel once again led by six early in the third quarter when Metzel buried a three-pointer from the top of the key that made it a 27-21 game. Though the Dragons played good defense and held the Dukes without a point for the first 2:33 of the period, Drexel could not capitalize offensively and did not score again itself until a Greenberg jumper with 4:55 to go in the third made it a 29-26 Dragons lead.
That signaled the end of Drexel's edge on Sunday afternoon. James Madison rattled off five straight points to take a 31-29 lead, and after Metzel pulled the Dragons back even with 1:25 to go in the third, the Dukes closed out the quarter with five more in a row to lead 36-31.
The Dragons got the ball first in the fourth quarter, and held it for more than 90 seconds as James Madison committed three early fouls and Drexel grabbed a pair of offensive boards. Despite that, the Dragons could not score, and JMU made it a seven-point game when it finally got possession. In all, the Dukes went on a 12-0 run that started with the five points to close the third quarter. Extending it further, it was a 21-3 run that turned a 29-26 Dragons lead into a 47-32 James Madison cushion.
The Dragons will now go a full week between games, as they will take on travel partner Delaware in the first game of that annual rivalry next Sunday. That game, which will be in Newark, Del., will tip off at 2 p.m.
