Walton Hits Late Game Winner, Drexel Clips Abilene Christian, 86-83 in Overtime

PHILADELPHIA -- Zach Walton capped off a career afternoon by hitting the game-winning three-pointer with just 2.2 seconds remaining in overtime to give Drexel an 86-83 win over visiting Abilene Christian. Walton finished the game with a personal-best 22 points. The win lifts Drexel to 2-1 in the early season. Reigning Southland Conference champion Abilene Christian drops to 1-1.
HIGHLIGHTS
-Walton came off the bench and shot 7-for-13 from the floor. The senior also grabbed seven rebounds and blocked a pair of shots.
-James Butler picked up his second consecutive double-double. He had 13 points and 13 rebounds and is averaging 14.3 rebounds per game through three contests. Butler also blocked three shots.
-Sam Green, who scored just nine points all of last season, tied his career-high with 11 points. The senior sank a pair of three-pointers and was 4-for-5 from the field.
GAMEPLAY
Drexel scored the final five points in overtime to pull out a three-point win over the Wildcats. Trailing 83-81 with 1:14 to go, Camren Wynter found James Butler in the lane and the senior turned and scored to tie it up at 83. Each team would commit a turnover in the final minute leading to the exciting conclusion. Drexel freshman Mate Okros drew an offensive foul, but the Dragons could not score. On the other end, with just 28 seconds to go Matey Juric forced a turnover as he knocked the ball away from a Wildcat. That gave Drexel possession and Walton made a three-pointer to give Drexel the win. Abilene Christian had a desperation heave by Ricks, but it wasn't close as the Dragons swept their weekend homestand at the DAC.
Abilene Christian had a chance to win in regulation. Walton tied the game at 77-77 with 20 seconds to play. The Wildcats possession stalled until the closing seconds when Reggie Miller tried to get to the basket. He ran into a wall of Butler and Walton, and the latter blocked the shot forcing the extra period.
The Dragons led by as many as nine in the first half and took a 47-42 lead to intermission. Drexel shot 59 percent in the first half, but 13 turnovers kept the visitors in the game.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Drexel outrebounded the Wildcats, 45-22, and shot 52 percent in the game. Abilene Christian stayed in the game by forcing 24 turnovers.
-Payten Ricks led everyone with 29 points. He sank five three-pointers in the game.
-Clay Gayman scored 21 points and was 8-for-9 from the floor.
