Women's Basketball Extends Win Streak, 58-41 Over Delaware
2/10/2019 7:32:00 PM | Women's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA – Streaks continued for the Drexel women's basketball team on Sunday, as the Dragons handled Delaware at the Daskalakis Athletic Center, 58-41. Drexel (16-5, 8-2) led nearly the entire game for its eighth consecutive victory overall and ninth straight against the Blue Hens, establishing a new program record for consecutive victories against the longtime rival.
The eight-game winning streak, which started at Delaware back on Jan. 13, is now tied for the fifth-longest winning streak in program history. It is the third eight-game winning streak the Dragons have had, and the second consecutive season to feature such a stretch. Drexel also has two nine-game winning streaks and two 16-game winning streaks in its annals.
Bailey Greenberg led the way for the Dragons yet again, scoring 23 points to go along with seven rebounds. She, too, continued a streak as she became the first Dragon to score 20 or more in four consecutive games since Gabriela Marginean did so in nine straight from Dec. 21, 2009 through Jan. 21, 2010. Greenberg was 9-for-18 from the floor, posting at least a .500 shooting percentage in all four contests.
Hannah Nihill added 12 points and two steals, going 5-for-8 from the floor. Aubree Brown scored seen with five boards, three assists and two helpers. Keishana Washington chipped in six points and a pair of steals while Maura Hendrixson added three points, three assists and three rebounds. Tereza Kracikova also netted three, and Kayla Bacon and Niki Metzel finished with two apiece. Metzel also grabbed four rebounds.
After Delaware got the game's first points, Drexel scored seven in a row to take a lead it would never relinquish. Greenberg opened the scoring for the Dragons with a three-pointer from the top of the key. Washington followed with a bucket off a Nihill steal and assist, and Greenberg made it 7-2 with a jumper off a feed from Metzel.
It was 16-6 with 2:46 to go in the first quarter when Delaware called a timeout that stalled the Dragons offensively. It appeared they would go scoreless over that final stretch, but Nihill raced upcourt with four seconds to play and hit a runner from just inside the three-point line that gave Drexel an 18-10 cushion after one. The Dragons had capitalized on nine Delaware turnovers in the first 10 minutes of action, scoring half their points off Delaware giveaways.
Drexel steadily expanded its lead throughout the ballgame, outscoring the Blue Hens in all four quarters and seizing a game-best 22-point lead, 56-34, with 4:36 to play in the fourth on a Greenberg free throw.
With the win, the Dragons move a half game ahead of UNCW for second place in the CAA, just one game back of first-place James Madison. Drexel and fifth-place Delaware are the only teams to have played just 10 league games as the first weekend of the second trip through CAA action concluded on Sunday. The rest of the league has played 11 CAA contests.
Drexel will remain at home next weekend as the Dragons host Hofstra on Friday at 7 p.m. and Northeastern on Sunday at 2 p.m. The Dragons will be attempting to sweep the season series from both after claiming victories on the road Jan. 18 and 20.
