HARRISONBURG, Va. – Alihan Demir scored 23 points and James Butler had a double-double, but James Madison (11-15, 4-9 CAA) held off the Dragons in a CAA contest on Thursday night, 71-69. The Dragons (12-15, 6-8 CAA) trailed by as many as 15 points before mounting a late comeback that came up just short.
Drexel cut the lead down to just one with 11 seconds to go when Camren Wynter nailed a three-pointer. The Dragons tried to foul on the inbounds, but Darius Banks eluded two Drexel defenders. He was finally fouled with 3.4 seconds to go and made both free throws to put JMU up by three. Drexel got the ball in to Troy Harper, who the Dukes fouled before he got a shot off. Harper then made the first free throw, making the score 71-69, before missing the second intentionally. Drexel had possession after the ball went off a JMU defender with .08 to go. However, the Dragons were unable to get a shot as the inbounds pass in the lane was knocked away.
Dwight Wilson had a huge game for the Dukes. He scored 20 points and snared a game-high 18 rebounds. Wilson was 9-for-11 from the floor. Stuckey Mosley added 15 points for the Dukes, who shot 57 percent on the night. It was the Dukes seventh straight win against DU in the Convocation Center.
Demir scored 23 points on 10-for-19 shooting. Butler finished the night with 14 points and 13 rebounds. The Dragons starting backcourt struggled as Wynter was saddled with three fouls in the first half, which cut into his productivity. Troy Harper, coming off a 30-point game on Saturday, scored 11 points but was just 2-for-15 from the field and missed on all six of his long range attempts. As a team, the Dragons were just 5-for-20 from deep and finished the night shooting just 38 percent.
With the game tied at 20-20, JMU went on a 17-2 run to take a 15-point lead. The Dragons missed 14 of 15 shots during that run before rebounding to score the final six points of the half to cut the deficit to nine at 37-28. Demir and Butler scored 16 of the teams 28 points. JMU shot 57 percent in the opening stanza.
Drexel plays its final road game of the regular season on Saturday afternoon at Towson.
