Wrestling Drops Regular-Season Finale to Old Dominion on Senior Day

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel University wrestling team (4-11) dropped a Sunday afternoon nonconference dual to the Old Dominion Monarchs (9-7) from the Daskalakis Athletic Center by a final of 23-12. The Dragons got wins from redshirt sophomore Parker Kropman (149), junior Ebed Jarrell (165), freshman Anthony Walters (184) and redshirt senior Joey Goodhart (HWT) in the affair.
Before the dual, Drexel recognized outgoing seniors Willie Davis, Loiseau and Goodhart during a senior day ceremony.
The match commenced at 165 pounds with No. 15-ranked Jarrell going up against ODU's Shane Jones. Jarrell opened up the scoring in the first with a takedown before riding Jones out for the final 1:07 to go up 2-0. In the second, the Drexel junior earned an escape and takedown while riding time climbed to a comfortable 1:40. Leading 5-0, Jones grabbed his only point with an escape before Jarrell tacked on the riding time point for the 6-1 decision. He improved to 20-2 on the year on 13-1 in duals.
Redshirt freshman Bryan McLaughlin battled a tough foe in Old Dominion's Luke Drugac in the second bout at 174 pounds. The duo was tangling in the early goings as there were three restarts after action went off the mat. McLaughlin earned the first takedown as he held a 2-1 edge after the first period. In the second, Drugac tied it up with an escape before adding a takedown. McLaughlin escaped late as he now trailed 4-3. The redshirt freshman evened it up in the third with an escape before his second takedown gave him a 6-4 advantage. But Drugac kept fighting as he got back within one after an escape, 6-5. Drugac flipped the script in the final seconds with a takedown as time expired as McLaughlin lost the 7-6 decision. The match was now tied 3-3.
At 184 pounds, freshman Anthony Walters won his second-straight dual match with a 5-3 decision over the Monarchs' Dean Drugac. Walters had takedowns in both the first and second periods as he held the lead through the bout. It came as his sixth win of the season and fourth in a dual as Drexel took a 6-3 edge in the match.
Redshirt senior Stephen Loiseau, ranked No. 14, lost a tight battle at 197 pounds against ODU's Tim Young. Loiseau began with a quick takedown but two stalemates and a stall warning led to Young picking up an escape. Loiseau started on the defensive in the second and took a 3-1 lead with an escape, but Young evened it up with a takedown, 3-3, as Loiseau led riding time 1:15. Starting neutral in the third, Young went up 5-3 with a takedown before the Drexel senior got within one via an escape. Young gained advantage late as Loiseau's riding time ticked under a minute as Old Dominion picked up the 5-4 decision to even the score overall, 6-6.
In the fifth bout of the day, No. 14-ranked heavyweight Joey Goodhart earned his team-best 28th win of the season and the 96th of his career. He is now alone in 12th place all-time at Drexel for career victories. Goodhart picked up the 2-1 decision on Sunday with an escape and 1:12 of riding time over ODU's Ali Wahab. It was Goodhart's fourth win of the season after scoring only two points in a bout. He has held opponents to one point or less in 11 wins in 2018-19.
Drexel held a 9-6 lead over Old Dominion after five matches as the affair went to halftime.
Picking up with lightweights after the break, freshman Antonio Mininno faced his second-straight ranked wrestler of the weekend with ODU's No. 14 Michael McGee. Mininno lost by a 16-4 major decision on Sunday, his first major decision loss since January 1 at the South Scuffle against Penn State's Devin Schnupp. The Monarchs went up 10-9 in the dual.
Redshirt freshman Alex Salas also lost a major decision to ODU's Trevon Majette at 133 pounds as Old Dominion took a 14-9 lead. A first-period pin for the Monarchs' No. 14-ranked Sa'Derian Perry against junior Nick Widmann at 141 pounds gave ODU the 20-9 hold in the match.
With just two bouts left at 149 and 157 pounds, Drexel was in an 11-point hole and needed two wins by fall.
Redshirt sophomore transfer Parker Kropman got an 10-4 decision at 149 pounds. Tied 2-2 after the first period, Kropman scored a three-point second period with an escape and takedown. He added two more takedowns in the third with 2:05 of riding time to win, 10-4.
Sophomore Evan Barczak faced No. 6-ranked Larry Early to finish the dual. Barczak was able to keep it close. He earned two escapes in the first as he trailed 5-2 after two periods. The sophomore grabbed a takedown in the third before dropping the bout by a 9-4 decision.
