
Women’s Rowing Wins 13th Lela H. Kerr Cup; Medals in All Five Events

FULL RESULTS
PHILADELPHIA – At the 53rd annual Kerr Cup Regatta, the Drexel University women's rowing team took home the Lela H. Kerr Cup for the seventh time in 10 years with a varsity eight win on Saturday afternoon on the Schuylkill River. On the day, the women grabbed medals in all five of their finals events with two golds and three silvers.
The regatta, which is hosted in conjunction with Drexel Alumni, is named in honor of Dr. Thomas Kerr, the founding coach of Drexel Rowing and former team physician.

ON THE DAY
The varsity eight, racing in the Alleva XVII with coxswain Maggie Collington, won an eight-second victory over Temple for the Kerr Cup victory. The Dragons crossed at 6:37.90 with the Owls following up at 6:45.87. Jefferson took third with a time of 6:54.87.
The second varsity eight, in the Cara Fry with coxswain Natalie Cleri, also took home a gold medal with a time of 7:00.97 ahead of Temple (7:06.93) and Villanova (7:23.61).
All three fours earned silver medals on the day. The varsity four (7:58.20) narrowly lost out to Lafayette (7:58.20). The varsity four B (8:21.41) took second place behind Temple (7:59.73. The freshman four (8:12.61) finished behind winner Lafayette (8:00.91).
NEXT UP
The Dragons will return to the Schuylkill River next Saturday, April 27 to compete at the Bergen and Kelly Cups, the unofficial city championships hosted by Saint Joseph's.
HISTORY & ORGINS
The Kerr Cup Regatta was established by Drexel University Alumni in 1967 to honor former Drexel Crew Coach, Dr. Thomas Kerr, Jr. Dr. Kerr passed away in 1988 at the age of 78. Dr. Kerr is credited with starting the Drexel crew program in 1957, serving as coach until 1968. He also served as the crew's team physician and surgeon. He competed in the 1932 Olympics in the four-oared boat and was a member of the national champion eight-oared Shell-Penn A.C. in 1931. Lela Kerr, Dr. Kerr's wife, passed away in January 2018 at the age of 99.
The winners of the men's varsity eight race will be awarded the Dr. Thomas Kerr Cup. The winners of the women's varsity eight race will be awarded the Lela H. Kerr Cup.
