Dr. Eric Zillmer, Director of Athletics and Carl Pacifico Professor of Neuropsychology, will be honored at the May 22nd Provost's Faculty Recognition Dinner for "Outstanding Teaching in the Honors Program."
"Each year the Pennoni Honors College recognizes a superlative teacher in its Honors Program—someone who thrives in the seminar format, whose teaching is innovative, stimulating, and fun. Eric Zillmer epitomizes such a teacher and is this year's winner of our Pennoni Honors Program Teaching Award," said Dr. Paula Cohen, Dean of the Pennoni Honors College. "Dr. Zillmer throws himself into his classes with zest and originality. He is a psychologist with a keen interest in sports, music, and literature, whose life experiences involve knowledge of different cultures and of little-known aspects of organizations and governments. That he also happens to be Drexel's Athletic Director says something about the values that we as a University hold in our relationship to our student-athletes," added Cohen.
Zillmer is being recognized for innovation in teaching at Drexel University's Pennoni Honors College (PHC). In his academic life, his books on Sports Psychology, Military Psychology, and Neuroscience, have been translated to an international audience including Czech, Chinese, Korean, and Portuguese. At the PHC he has taught courses on the Psychology of Music, the Rise of ISIS, and currently is co-teaching with Dr. Daniel Dougherty, the Honor Program's Director, a class on the Politics of Energy.
"I have personally visited Dr. Zillmer's classes, listened to his presentations, and read several of his books. He is a scholar of the highest caliber, he is interesting and innovative, and he has a gift for connecting with our students. I am also especially proud that he extends the academic integrity of the classroom to include our highly respected Division I athletics programs. We are fortunate to have him at Drexel University. Congratulations, well deserved!" said Chuck Pennoni, President Emeritus at Drexel University.
Drexel Atheltics sponsors NCAA Division I for over 450 student-athletes. Graduation rates for Drexel's student-athletes have been consistently higher than other NCAA Division I schools as well as that of the general student body at Drexel University. The latest statistics indicate that six Drexel athletic teams scored a perfect 100 percent on the NCAA Graduation Success Rate report, including men's basketball. Drexel is a member of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), which ranks No. 4 among the nation's 32 athletic conferences in latest Academic Progress Rate (APR) ratings.
"The Pennoni Honors College allows me to put intellectual and experiential innovation to the test in the classroom. Pennoni Honors College students take their classes serious and their passion motivates me to bring my A game every week. The experience in the classroom also allows me to understand first-hand the academic challenges as well as aspirations of our students, which I use in our athletic programs at Drexel on a daily basis," said Zillmer.
