
Men’s Rowing Concludes Weekend at IRA National Championships

GOLD RIVER, Calif. – The Drexel men's rowing team concluded their time at the 117th Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championships, which took place from Friday, May 31 through Sunday, June 2, from Lake Natoma in Gold River, Calif.
FULL RESULTS
Sunday Finals
Overall, the varsity 8 finished 21st, the second varsity 8 20th, the third varsity 8 16th and the varsity 4 18th.
The varsity 8 placed 3rd of 6 in the fourth final with a time of 5:56.793 behind the winner, FIT (5:51.588) and Oregon State (5:55.091).
The second varsity 8 took 2nd of their five boat, fourth final with a mark of 6:07.353, trailing only UCSD (6:04.730). The third varsity 8 owned a third finals time of 6:09.522 as they came in 4th of 7 with Cornell, Oregon State and George Washington leading the way.
The varsity 4 posted a time of 6:42.463 in their third final.
Saturday Semifinals
In the third semifinal, the varsity 8 narrowly edged out Oregon State for fourth place in the race. Penn (5:47.941) came in first followed by George Washington (5:48.884) and Colgate (5:52.801). The Dragons crossed with a time of 5:54.476, just ahead to the Beavers at 5:54.986.
The second varsity 8 also placed fourth in their semifinal. Columbia (5:56.287) took first with Penn (5:59.278), Hobart (6:02.765), Drexel (6:05.560), Santa Clara (6:09.695) and FIT (6:13.672) rounding out the field.
Friday Heats
Facing some of the toughest competition in the country, the Dragons had four boats in the morning heats (varsity 8, second varsity 8, varsity 4 and third varsity 8). None of the boats were fast enough to move straight to the Saturday semifinals and had to fare through the afternoon repechages. The varsity 8 took 6th of 6 in the heats; the second varsity 8 placed 5th of 5; the third varsity 8 finished 4th of 5; the varsity 4 came in 4th of 4.
The varsity 8 was within three seconds of second place after the first 500 meters but fell behind by almost 17 seconds over the next 1000 meters to finished sixth. Drexel clocked a time of 6:08.250.
The third varsity 8 had the fastest time of the Drexel boats in the heats at 6:06.108 to take 4th of 5 in their heat. The second varsity 8 was at 6:18.554 for their 2000-meter race.
Friday Repechages
The varsity 8 finished with a time of 6:02.332 in their afternoon repechage, roughly six seconds faster than their morning heat.
The second varsity 8 finished with a time of 6:13.032 in their repechage after a 6:18.554 pace in the morning heat.
The third varsity 8 took 4th of 6 in their repechage at 6:12.685 which was slightly slower than their 6:06.108 in the morning heat.
The varsity 4 came in with a time of 6:58.123.
