1/16/2020 9:59:00 PM | Men's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA – A dominant second half propelled Drexel Men's Basketball to a 63-41 victory over Elon at the Daskalakis Athletic Center on Thursday night. The Dragons (11-8, 4-2 Colonial Athletic Association) trailed by one point at the break but outscored the Phoenix (5-14, 1-5) 43-20 in the second stanza for their eighth home win of the season.
Camren Wynter, Zach Walton and James Butler led the way for Drexel with a combined 58 points on 22-of-40 shooting. Wynter posted a game-high 27 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals. Butler notched his 12th double-double of the season with 15 points and 15 boards, and Walton earned the first double-double of his Drexel career with 16 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks.
Defensively, the Dragons held Elon to 18-of-58 shooting (.310) and a 4-of-24 mark from three-point range. The Phoenix entered the day as the CAA's most-prolific shooting team from range, making 10.5 treys per game.
The first half was a sluggish affair for both sides, and Elon took a 21-20 lead into the intermission. Drexel made just one-third of its shots in the first and was 1-of-7 from deep. The Phoenix fared little better, shooting 36 percent from the floor.
Elon jumped out to a 7-0 run late in a tight first half to take a 19-14 lead with 2:35 to play, which matched its largest lead of the game. Butler halted the run with a layup with 1:46 to go, and Wynter followed a Hunter Woods layup with back-to-back buckets to make it a one-point game at the half.
The Dragons roared to life in the second half to run away with the game. Drexel made 56 percent of its shots in the period, going 14-of-25, while further clamping down on the Phoenix. Elon made just nine field goals on 33 second-half attempts (.273).
Walton and Wynter led the charge out of the gates, combining to score the first 14 points of the second for Drexel. Walton hit a layup to give the Dragons a 27-23 edge just over two minutes into the half then passed the baton to Wynter, who went on a personal 7-0 run. When Wynter's binge concluded, the Dragons had their first double-digit lead of the game at 34-23 with 14:50 to play.
Elon recovered from Drexel's blitz with 13 of the next 20 points, highlighted by a 7-0 run and a DU scoring drought of 5:07, but the Dragons soon landed the knockout blow. Wynter sank a layup with 6:12 to play to ignite an 11-0 run. Drexel held the Phoenix scoreless for over three-and-a-half minutes and forced misses on nine of Elon's final 11 shots of the night. On the other side of the court, the Dragons shot 6-of-7 in the closing stretch, including five-straight makes to see out the game.
The Phoenix mustered its final points of the game on a Marcus Sheffield three-pointer with 2:37 to go, and Drexel closed with nine straight to cap a 22-5 run over the final six-plus minutes.
The Dragons close out the weekend by hosting William & Mary on Homecoming Saturday. That game starts at 2 p.m. inside the Daskalakis Athletic Center.
