Women’s Basketball Defeats UNCW to Begin New Year, 76-63

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Drexel University women's basketball team (3-1, 1-0 CAA) took down the UNCW Seahawks (3-4, 0-1 CAA) on Saturday, Jan. 2 from Trask Coliseum in Wilmington, N.C. by a final of 76-63.
HIGHLIGHTS
* The win came as the Dragons' 19th straight over the Seahawks in the all-time series between the two teams.
* After a balanced first quarter with seven different scorers, Drexel depended on big quarters in the middle periods: junior Keishana Washington in the second with 10 of the team's 18 and senior Hannah Nihill in the third with 11 of the team's 15. DU exploded for 27 points in the fourth which saw the team attempt its first free throws as the squad went 11-of-12 from the line to keep the game out of reach.
* Drexel was led by four double-digit scorers: Nihill (18), junior Maura Hendrixson (12), Washington (12) and senior Kayla Bacon (11).
* Senior Mariah Leonard also finished with nine points on 4-of-5 shooting and a game- and career-high 10 rebounds.
* Nihill also dished out five assists and grabbed five rebounds and two steals in the win.
* Hendrixson shot 4-of-7 from the floor with two three-pointers and six rebounds.
* Washington went 5-of-10 from the field with two treys, three boards and one assist. She scored 10 points in the second quarter alone.
* Bacon scored seven points in the fourth quarter including 5-of-5 from the free-throw line as she finished with 11 points, eight rebounds and one assist.
* Redshirt sophomore transfer Tori Hyduke and freshman Chloe Hodges both made their first appearances for the Dragons.
* Hyduke scored seven points with three assists.

After falling behind 4-0, the Dragons went on a 9-0 run to take their first lead of the day behind baskets from Nihill, Washington, Hendrixson and Leonard. Leading 9-4 with 4:50 at the first media timeout, Drexel got more support with a trey from Hyduke (her first as a Dragon) and field goals from Connolly and Bacon as seven scorers were featured in the quarter for DU. Drexel led 16-11 after 10 minutes, holding the Seahawks to 4-of-15 shooting.

Washington caught fire in the second quarter, going 4-of-5 with two treys for 10 points in the period to lead all scorers with 12 at halftime. Drexel extended its lead to as many as 11 before taking the eight-point advantage into intermission, 34-26. The Dragons held UNCW to 4-of-12 shooting in the second and 29.6% in the first half. The Seahawks were able to stay within reach after going 8-of-9 from the free-throw line, including 5-of-6 in the second frame, as DU racked up 10 fouls.

An 8-0 run out of the locker room saw UNCW tie up the contest at 34-34 before Drexel drop the edge with a three-point from Nihill. The Drexel senior scored 11 of the team's 15 points in the third as DU maintained a slight edge throughout the remainder of the period. Drexel took a 49-43 lead into the fourth after a last second three-pointer from UNCW.

The fourth quarter saw the rhythm of the game change with 10 fouls called in the first five minutes as Connolly fouled out and Leonard and Hendrixson each went to the bench with four infractions. The Dragons got their first attempts at the free-throw line in the fourth to keep the lead in double-digits. Bacon and Leonard both converted three-point plays late in the period. Bacon and Hendrixson both scored seven points in the fourth to reach double-digits on the day as the Dragons held on for the 76-63 win. Drexel scored 27 points in the quarter to put up a season-best 76 points in the contest.
