Men's Soccer Edged in Tightly Contested CAA Semifinals Match with Hofstra, 2-1

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - The Drexel Dragons fell short to the Hofstra Pride in the 2021 CAA Semifinals, 2-1 on Thursday night in Hempstead, N.Y.
Drexel and the Pride both scored a goal in the first half. Hofstra struck first in the 12th minute of the game. Matthew Vowinkle tapped a loose ball into the back of the net to give the hosts a lead. Drexel then knotted the game at one in the 18th minute with one of the team's best goals of the season. All-CAA third team recipient Kyle Tucker played the ball into the center of the field and found a wide-open Daniel Nesseler, who sent a shot past the Hofstra keeper.
In the second half, the Pride added a tally to take a 2-1 lead. Vowinkle scored the goal in the 50th minute. That goal would end up being the game-winner as Hofstra tightened its defensive play and held Drexel in check.
Cameron Sanders earned the start in goal after he received the All-CAA Third Team nod. Through 90 minutes, the redshirt-senior saved two shots.
Drexel kept up with the nationally-ranked No. 13 Hofstra until the final whistle. The Pride took 15 shots and could only put four on target, while the Dragons took 14 shots and put six on target.
The Dragons end their season with an 8-8-1 record and 4-3-1 in conference play.
