PHILADELPHIA – Drexel closed the game by scoring the final eight points and outlasted Coppin State, 76-69, at the Daskalakis Athletic Center.
The Dragons (5-5) trailed by one point after a Tyree Corbett free throw made it 69-68 with 3:06 to play. That would be the Eagles last point of the game. Lamar Oden, Jr., who made his first collegiate start, countered with a 3-point play to put the Dragons ahead by two. Coppin State had a shot to go ahead but Amari Williams had a big rejection with just over a minute to play. On the ensuing possession, Williams came up with an offensive rebound, scored on the put back and was fouled. He made the free throw to give Drexel a five-point cushion. Mate Okros sealed the game after a missed 3-pointer by the Eagles. The junior sank a pair of free throws as the Dragons evened their record at 5-5. Coppin State fell to 1-14.
Drexel led by six at the half, but Coppin State opened the second half with eight straight points to take the lead. The game went back and forth for most of the second half as the Dragons struggled from long range after shooting it well in the first half. Over the final 20 minutes, Drexel was just 2-for-16 from deep. The Dragons made eight 3-pointers in the first half as six different players had at least one trey.
Oden finished the game 3-for-5 from the floor and 7-for-9 from the line as he eclipsed his career-high in scoring. Williams and Camren Wynter each added 12 points. Williams finished with seven rebounds and a pair of blocks while Wynter handed out six assists. James Butler posted a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Corbett led the Eagles with 20 points and 14 rebounds. He was 7-for-18 shooting. Kyle Cardaci sank five 3-pointers and added 17 points. The Eagles wore Drexel practice jerseys as they did not have their game jerseys with them on the trip.
The Dragons finish the non-conference portion of their schedule with two local road games. Drexel plays at Temple on Saturday and will visit La Salle on Tuesday.
