Karnik Wins Bronze in First Night of CAA Championships

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. – The Drexel men's swimming team finished its first day at the CAA Championships on Wednesday. Kacper Karnik won the bronze medal in the 200 IM to give Drexel its first podium finish.
To start the championships, Drexel competed in the 200 free relay. The team of Karnik, Alex Flynn, T.J. Given and John Scully finished with a time of 1:22.06 and took fifth.
Xabier Carneiro, Will Soleo and Jake McBride advanced to the nightcap in the 500 free. Carneiro finished his preliminary swim with a time of 4:39.29 and a spot in the B-Finals. Soleo (4:37.35) and McBride (4:37.26) earned spots in the A-Finals. Carneiro finished his race in 4:37.86 to place 10th. Soleo finished the A-Finals race with a time of 4:33.60, placing him in fifth, and McBride finished with a time of 4:35.34 and placed sixth.
The Dragons had three swimmers reach the final races in the 200 IM. Paris Raptis reached the B-Finals by swimming a 1:51.62. He was joined by Zachary Valenzuela, who swam a 1:53.58 preliminary. In the A-Finals, the Dragons were represented by Karnik who swam an impressive 1:48.39 preliminary. Raptis won the B-Finals race with a time of 1:48.95. Valenzuela touched the wall in 1:53.59 and finished in seventh. In the A-Finals, Karnik finished with bronze after touching the wall in 1:47.29. It was the first medal of his career. Karnik finished just two-tenths of a second behind second and first place.
Drexel also sent three swimmers to the finals in the 50 free, night one's last individual event. Given (20.97) and Flynn (21.22) made the B-Finals race. Scully advanced to the A-Finals after posting a time of 20.39. In the B-Finals, Given finished in eighth with a time of 21.21, and Flynn finished in seventh with a time of 21.19. In the A-Finals, Scully finished with a time of 20.41 to place sixth.
In the final event of the night, the team of John Klein, Karnik, Raptis and Given participated in the 400 medley relay. The four swimmers combined for a total time of 3:20.60 and placed fifth.
The Dragons will return to the Christiansburg Aquatic Center on Friday, April 2, to continue with the CAA Championships. Preliminaries will begin at 11:10 a.m., and finals will start at 7:25 p.m. Both can be seen on FloSports
