Bell Scores 22 as Drexel Defeats Northeastern, 67-51

PHILADELPHIA – Xavier Bell scored 22 points as Drexel defeated Northeastern, 67-51, at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. The Dragons raced out to a big early lead and cruised to the victory, holding the Huskies to just 35 percent shooting in the game.
The Dragons (12-11, 7-6 CAA) went on an 11-0 run midway through the first half to extend their lead to 17 points and 29-12. After Northeastern (7-18, 1-13 CAA) finally broke the scoreless drought of almost four minutes with five straight points, the Dragons answered with the final seven points of the half. Drexel went to the locker room ahead of the Huskies, 36-16, and led by at least 12 points the rest of the way. The Drexel defense held the Huskies to just 20 percent shooting in the first half and NU was 0-for-7 from deep.
Bell scored 14 of his 22 points in the first half. It was his third 20-point performance of the season. Melik Martin had a nice all-around game for the Dragons. The graduate student had 13 points, six rebounds and three steals. Two of those steals came on back-to-back possessions after Northeastern had trimmed the deficit to 12 points. Camren Wynter was held to just nine points, but handed out seven assists and had seven rebounds. With his fourth assist, Wynter passed Frantz Massenat to move into third place on Drexel's career assist list. Amari Williams finished with nine points, six rebounds and four blocked shots. He came into the game leading the CAA in rejections.
Chris Doherty scored 17 points and had 12 rebounds to lead the Huskies in both categories. Shaquille Walters added 12 points, while Nikola Djogo chipped in with 12. The Huskies were just 3-for-15 from behind the arc on the day.
The Dragons begin their final road trip of the regular season on Sunday. They will face the College of Charleston on Monday night and play both William & Mary and Elon before returning home.
