Women's Basketball Turns Up The Defense to Down Northeastern

BOSTON – The Drexel University women's basketball team turned in an outstanding defensive effort in the middle 20 minutes of action as the Dragons downed the Northeastern Huskies 61-46 on Sunday afternoon.

The Dragons return home for a midweek game, hosting the James Madison Dukes on Wednesday, February 16. The game is a makeup from December. Tipoff from the Daskalakis Athletic Center is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.

- Keishana Washington led all scorers with 19 points in the game.
- Tessa Brugler was also in double figures, netting 14. Hannah Nihill added 10.
- Jasmine Valentine was big on the boards with a career-high 13 rebounds, seven on the offensive glass.
- After surrendering 15 points in the first, Drexel allowed just 11 points in the next 20 minutes, holding NU to 3-for-30 shooting in the second and third.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Neither team shot particularly well in the early stages as the game was knotted 7-7 at the first media timeout. After the Huskies jumped on top, the Dragons responded with a 7-0 run to end the opening period down by just one. The run carried over the quarter break as DU scored the first four points of the frame to take the lead.
- During the second period, Drexel turned up the defense, forcing five turnovers as DU opened a 25-17 lead thanks to outscoring Northeastern 11-2 in the period. Valentine was a big key for the Dragons in the frame, pulling in seven rebounds, five of them on the offensive glass, helping lead to five second chance points.
- Brugler picked up the offensive pace in the third, scoring six points. The defense also continued to hold strong as Northeastern shot just 2-for-19 from the field.
- The Huskies made a run in the fourth, closing the gap to 50-41 with 2:28 to go, but a trey by Washington provided the final say before Drexel sealed the game at the line.
