Women's Basketball Earns Senior Day Win Against Elon

PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel University women's basketball team used a 20-7 run in the final seven minutes of the third quarter as the Dragons downed the Elon Phoenix 72-57 on Senior Day on Sunday afternoon.
Prior to the game, the Dragons honored Tessa Brugler, Kate Connolly, Maura Hendrixson, Mariah Leonard, Hannah Nihill, and Keishana Washington for their work with the team. Also honored were Kayla Bacon from last year's team and Sam Banks who has been a team manager for five seasons.

Drexel hits the road for its final two regular season games, opening with a contest in Harrisonburg, Va. at James Madison on Thursday, March 3. Tipoff from the Atlantic Bank Union Center is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

BY THE NUMBERS
- Brugler filled the stat sheet with 23 points, nine rebounds, four assists, two blocks, and two steals.
- Washington led all scorers with 27 points in the game, her 12th contest this season with 20+ points.
- Nihill scored 16 and dished seven assists, not committing a turnover.
- Drexel forced 18 Elon miscues and scored 27 points off those turnovers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams got off to a sloppy start, but Drexel was able to shake the doldrums quicker, taking a 10-1 lead on a three-pointer by Washington, forcing a Phoenix timeout. Elon battled back and cut the lead to a single point before Brugler beat the first quarter horn with a step back trey, giving the Dragons a 15-11 edge after 10 minutes.
- DU shot better in the second, going 9-for-18 from the floor, but the Phoenix hung around, getting the advantage down to 26-24 before a late 8-0 spurt with a basket each from Washington, Leonard, Brugler, and Nihill sent the Dragons into intermission with a 10-point lead.
- After trading baskets for the opening two-plus minutes of the third, Drexel embarked on the decisive run, started by a layup from Brugler and capped by a triple from Washington, allowing the Dragons to build their largest lead of the afternoon at 58-36 with 15 seconds to go in the period.
- DU maintained the lead throughout the fourth as all six seniors had an opportunity to get the accolades from the crowd as they came off the floor.
