Women's Tennis Topples Tigers 6-1

PHILADELPHIA- The Drexel University women's tennis team picked up an important Colonial Athletic Association win, downing the Towson Tigers 6-1 on Wednesday afternoon.
The Dragons earned the opening point of the day by winning all three doubles matches. Starting at number two, the duo of Cristina Corte Gonzalez and Tara Veluvolu downed Jessica Assenmacher and Olivia Rothfeld 6-1. At first doubles, Lorie Lemongo and Mya Fuentes topped Themis Haliou and Sissi Axelsson 6-1. Finishing the sweep were Aida Garcia Mendez and Isabel Cabrerizo who beat Amelia Lawson and Lea Kosanovic 6-2 at number three.
Towson gained its only point of the day at second singles before Corte Gonzalez defeated Kosanovic 6-0, 6-0 in the number six slot to put Drexel up 2-1. Fuentes followed with a straight set victory at love against Axelsson at fifth flight. Lemongo delivered the clinching point at number one with a 6-3, 6-4 win against Haliou.
The Dragons won a pair of hardfought matches at three and four to cement the final score. In third singles, Cabrerizo won the first set 6-3 before Assenmacher won the second, 5-7 for the Tigers. Closing out the match, Cabrerizo took a 10-3 win in the final set. At number four, Garcia Mendez dropped the first set to Sarah Pospischill 4-6 before rallying to win the second, 7-6, claiming the tiebreaker 7-4. She then took the final set 10-8 to close the contest.
Drexel returns to action on Friday when it travels to Delaware for a CAA contest. Opening serve from Newark, Del. Is slated for 11:00 a.m.
