PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel University women's rowing team swept all three Varsity 8+ races as the Dragons won the Lela H. Kerr Cup for the 14th time in the last 19 years on Saturday afternoon.
FULL RESULTS
In the Varsity 8+, Drexel, rowing in Alleva XVII, took an early lead and was ahead by nearly a boat length at the dock. The group of Natalie Cleri (coxswain), Grace Comerford (stroke), Hayley McKeever, Mollie Knoff, Alexandra Natale, Isabella D'Angelo, Kirby Droogan, Giavanna Hunt, and Kayla Driscoll (bow) were in open water by the time they crossed the finish line with a 6:53.3 clocking, more than nine seconds ahead of second place Temple.
Just before the win in the Varsity 8+, the 2V8+ also claimed victory against the Owls. Competing in Cara Fry, Olivia Szabo (coxswain), Julianna Rogers (stroke), Rita Keefer, Makayla Wenzke, Lexie Hain, Rachel Willey, Rachel Civan, Anna Kretzer, and Morgan Van Dexter (bow) took a solid early lead, but a missed stroke, which allowed Temple to pull even at the midway point. Drexel was able to recover, finishing with a time of 7:22.0.
The Third Varsity 8+ saw the Dragons finish in 7:32.0 in Marlene Buckley II. In the Varsity 4+ Grand Final, DU got a challenge from Lafayette, but rowing in Marci, Drexel downed the Leopards by three seconds with a winning time of 8:23.9. The Second Varsity 4+ was much the same story as Lafayette provided the strongest competition, but DU came away with a win in Diane Corle with a 8:07.8 clocking.
Drexel returns to action on Saturday, April 23, hosting UMass on the Schuylkill River.
