Mitchell Fires a Five-Under 67 to lead the CAA Championships After Day One

Dragons will begin play on Monday in third place
ST. HELENA ISLAND, S.C. - Griffin Mitchell made his first CAA Championship appearance a memorable one on Sunday in South Carolina. The sophomore fired a five-under-par 67 and is atop the leader board after day one of the tournament at the Cotton Dike Course at Dataw Island. Drexel will head into round two on Monday in third place overall.
Mitchell started the day strong with two birdies on the first three holes. He played bogey-free golf until the 14th hole, but rebounded from a bogey to make a birdie on the par-three 17th hole. His 67 was one better than two other competitors, who finished at 68. Drue Nicholas was also under par for the Dragons. He sank a long birdie putt on 18 to finish the day at one-under par (71). Nicholas is tied for 10th overall. Jeffrey Cunningham and Angelo Giantsopoulos each ended the day at 76, while Tafadzwa Nyamukondiwa had a 77 in his first CAA Championship.
Drexel finished the day two shots over par (290). The Dragons are seven shots behind UNCW and nine in back of the College of Charleston, the defending champion. Delaware is three shots behind the Dragons, while Elon and Towson are four and five strokes behind DU, respectively. Play will resume at 8:30 on Monday morning. Drexel will have its first student-athlete tee off at 9:42 a.m.
