PHILADELPHIA - Former Drexel standout Malik Rose was inducted into the Philadelphia Black Basketball Hall of Fame over the weekend. Rose was one of 19 players honored at the Emerald Room on Saturday evening. The Philadelphia Black Basketball Hall of Fame was founded in 2017 and made its return Saturday after a few years that were interrupted by the pandemic.
Rose led the Dragons to three straight conference championships and NCAA appearances from 1994-96. He was named the conference tournament MVP in each of those seasons. As a senior, Rose led the Drexel to its first and only NCAA victory, a 75-63 win against Memphis. He averaged 20.2 points and 13.2 rebounds as the Dragons finished the season with a 27-4 record and a 17-1 mark in the North Atlantic Conference. He was named a UPI Third Team All-American as a senior and was a two-time America East Player of the Year. Rose finished his career with 2,024 points, the third-highest total in school history and is the school's all-time leader with 1,504 rebounds. He was a second round draft pick in 1996 by the Charlotte Hornets. Rose went on to play 13 seasons in the NBA, including eight with San Antonio, where he won two NBA Championships.
Rose joined an impressive 2022 class. Other players honored on Saturday included Jerome Allen, Joe Bryant, Kobe Bryant, Walter Byrd, Sean Colson, Dallas Comegys, Emmanuel "Vel" Davis, Kenny Hamilton, Shawn Harvey, Linda Hester, Wali Jones, Ollie Johnson, Yolanda Laney, Debbie Lytle, Pooh Richardson, Marilyn Stephens, Larry Stewart and Hubie White.
Three contributors (Ricky Tucker, Bill Williams and Greg Wright) were recognized as were Joe Goldenberg and Speedy Morris as friends of the Hall of Fame. The 1977-78 Cheyney State men's basketball national championship team was the only team recognized at the event.
