PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel University rowing teams gathered on Saturday with alumni and administration for the dedication of three new boats for the program.
The Dragons dedicated the Jim & Toni Downey, the Go Roe and the Laura Ludwick White with a traditional pour of champagne over each of the shells and a sprig of eucalyptus as a symbol of a safe return to shore.
"It's an honor to be able to be here and celebrate the achievements of our rowing programs, but also pay tribute to people who make it all possible," said Director of Athletics Maisha Kelly. "Your past and current support of our rowing programs has allowed our student-athletes to pursue championship experiences and be a part of a program that has garnered local, regional and national accolades."
Jim & Toni Downey is an 8-person plus coxswain boat, named for its benefactors, that was put into service last spring for the women's team. It helped the Drexel V8+ to wins at the Knecht Cup, Kerr Cup and Kelly Cup regattas in three consecutive weeks and a silver medal performance at the CAA Championships.
Go Roe was presented to the program by Kyle and Rochelle Roe and also saw action last spring, helping the men's V4+ to wins at the Kerr Cup and Bergen Cup Regattas.
The Laura Ludwick White will be in use for the first time this season. The boat is named after the former Drexel coach and administrator who spent 38 years with the Dragons, working primarily with the tennis, rowing and squash programs.
Also in attendance for the event were program dignitaries George Krall, Steve and Sandy Sheller, Ron Madden and Dr. Eric Zillmer.
Drexel sees its first action of the 2023-24 season when it competes at the Navy Day Regatta on Sunday, October 15.
