Dragons Down Fairfield in Opener of Market Street Challenge

PHILADELPHIA – Drexel opened up a big first half lead and defeated Fairfield, 65-47, on Friday night at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. It was the opening game of the Market Street Challenge.
Amari Williams led the Dragons with 13 points and 13 rebounds. It was his second double-double of the season and the 18th of his career. Jamie Bergens added 10 points as the Dragons got contributions from their entire team as they evened their record at 2-2.
Drexel began the game with its best half of the young season. The Dragons went 14-for-27 from the floor and held a 19-point lead at intermission. The Stags weren't able to get within 15 points the rest of the night. Drexel held the potent Stags' offense to just 30 percent shooting. Fairfield missed its first eight 3-point attempts before Brycen Goodine made two late 3-pointers. Nine Dragons had at least one point in the first half. Bergens, who banked a 3-pointer as time expired in the half, led the way with eight points off the bench.
Lamar Oden, Jr. snared 10 rebounds as the Dragons outrebounded the Stags by 16. Garfield Turner added nine points and was perfect from the floor (4-for-4). The Drexel defense had another strong performance as they held Fairfield to just 33 percent in the game. The Stags entered the game averaging just under 13 3-pointer and 81 points per game, but were just 4-for-17 from behind the arc.
Fairfield was led by Goodine who finished with 15 points. Caleb Fields, who made three 3-pointers, added 11 points.
Drexel will play its final game of the Market Street Challenge on Sunday at 2 p.m. against Queens (N.C.). Fairfield and Queens will play at the DAC on Saturday evening at 6 p.m. in the second game of the event.
