DORADO BEACH, PUERTO RICO - Junior Griffin Mitchell continued his outstanding start to the spring season by firing a five-under 67 at the first round of the Dorado Beach Collegiate in Puerto Rico. Mitchell is tied for third place individually after 18 holes. The Dragons finished the opening round at two-over par and are in 11th place in a field that has four teams ranked in the top 40 nationally.
Mitchell had five birdies on the front nine and seven overall on Sunday. He had just one bogey, which came on the par-four, 490-yard 15th hole. It was his second straight round of 68 or better. Drue Nicholas, last week's Colonial Athletic Association Co-Player of the Week, was under par yet again, this time with a one-under-par 71. Tafadzwa Nyamukondiwa ended the day with a three-over 73, while Oscar Maxfield had a 77. Liam Hart, playing as an independent, tied with Nyamukondiwa with a 73.
UNCG, who is the host school, is in first place at 15-under par at the Sugarcane Course at the Dorado Beach Resort and Club (TPC). The course is playing at 7,112 yards for the event. UNCG has a two-shot lead over Cincinnati and a seven-shot cushion over both Virginia and Duke. Drexel finds itself just five shots out of sixth place, which is currently occupied by second-ranked Auburn.
Round two will get underway on Monday morning, with the final round coming on Tuesday.
