NEWARK, Del. - Yame Butler came off the bench to score a career-high 17 points as Drexel defeated Delaware, 58-54. The Dragons (14-11, 8-5 CAA) swept the season series with the Blue Hens for the first time since 2011.
Butler, who appeared in just nine games, was pressed into action as Drexel played without point guard Justin Moore, who was out with an injury. The sophomore was 4-for-7 from the field and made both of his long-range attempts. Butler sank seven of eight from the free throw line and scored Drexel's final six points from the line as the Dragons held off a late run by the Blue Hens (12-14, 4-9). The Dragons held the Blue Hens without a 3-point field goal for the first 39 minutes of the game. Delaware made three 3-pointers in the final minute as they trimmed the deficit down to four, but couldn't get any closer.
Amari Williams added 10 points and led the Dragons with nine rebounds. He was the only other Drexel player in double figures scoring. Drexel shot 43 percent from the floor, but turned the ball over 17 times in the game. However, Delaware was only able to turn those turnovers into 10 points.
Jameer Nelson, Jr. led Delaware with 15 points and five assists. He was held to just 6-for-15 from the field by the Drexel defense, led mainly by Coletrane Washington. The Hens finished 3-for-15 from deep and lot for the third-straight game.
The Dragons busy week continues on Saturday. Drexel will host Towson at the Daskalakis Athletic Center before heading to Long Island to face Hofstra on Monday.
