Women's Rowing Earns Four Top-2 Finishes at Murphy Cup Regatta

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel women's rowing team posted a quartet of top-2 finishes out of five races it competed in at the 40th Murphy Cup Regatta on the Schuylkill River on Saturday.
The top two boats for DU both placed second in their events. The Varsity 8+, which is receiving votes in the Pocock CRCA Poll, debuted its newest shell, Jim and Toni Downey. Natalie Cleri (coxswain), Taylor Powell (stroke), Mollie Knoff, Giavanna Hunt, Rita Keefer, Kirby Droogan, Hayley McKeever, Julianna Rogers and Morgan Van Dexter (bow), turned in a time of 6:32.830. The Dragons trailed only No. 9 Penn in the race and bested an Old Dominion squad that is also receiving votes by more than 19 seconds.
Rowing in Alleva XVII, the 2V8+ of Chloe Minicucci (coxswain), Sophia Lamb (stroke), Kayla Driscoll, Ariana Townsend, Rachel Civan, Lexie Hain, Hannah Walseth, Katie Ernst and Julia Porro (bow) crossed the finish line in 6:52.990.
Winning its race was the 2V4+, competing in Sheller and consisting of Belen Rosales (coxswain), Anna Kretzer (stroke), Sarah Ghazaz, Emily Ellis and Baylor Henry (bow) clocked in at 7:53.100, more than three seconds ahead of Delaware.
Also picking up a victory for the Dragons was the 3V8+. The group of Maddie Depommier (coxswain), Margaret Dobrenko (stroke), Kira Tracy, Delaney Gellert, Fiona Steele, Sabrina Batdorf, Alexandra Gnoza, Ellen McCallin and Emma Doughty (bow) rowed Cara Fry to a time of 7:06.31, besting Penn by more than four seconds.
Drexel returns to action next Saturday when it travels to Cherry Hill, N.J. to compete in the Knecht Cup Regatta.
