PHILADELPHIA - The members of the Drexel women's basketball team are set for an exciting and engaging cultural experience as the Dragons embark on a 10-day trip to Ireland on Monday. Included on the itinerary are historic sites and three games against local competition.
"We are excited and grateful for the opportunity as a program to have this experience," said Janet E. and Barry C. Burkholder Family Women's Basketball Head Coach Amy Mallon. "It allows us to connect in many ways on and off the court while getting to partake in another culture and enrich our horizons."
Following the overnight flight and time change, the team arrives in Dublin on Tuesday morning and will enjoy a tour of the Trinity Trails and the Book of Kells. After a welcome lunch, Drexel heads to their hotel for the evening. Day two starts with a drive to the Cliffs of Moher and then lunch in Doolin. One of the highlights of the day is getting to stay the night in a castle that was built in the early 19th century and has since been converted into a hotel.
Upon waking up on day three, the Dragons tour Kylemore Abbey and bus through Connemara Park, making stops along the way for sightseeing. Drexel also plays its first game of the trip that evening against Galway AllStars.
Days four and five include some travel, but along the way, DU gets to experience the historic southern coastal cities of Kinsale and Cork and take a tour of the Ring of Kerry, with some of the most iconic views of the Irish landscape.
Beginning the second half of the journey, Drexel tours the famous Blarney Castle and Rock of Cashel before moving on to Dublin. On Monday, August 14, the team will take a walking tour of the Irish capital before playing its second game of the trip. Day eight features some free time in Dublin for the Dragons to sightsee and create their own cultural experience before playing their final game, taking on the Dublin Lions.
The final full day in Ireland has the team taking a trip to the Guiness Storehouse to learn about the history of the brand before one last night of shopping and sightseeing prior to returning home on Thursday.
Drexel last traveled abroad as a team in 2019 when it visited Greece.
