PHILADELPHIA - Drexel University had more than 300 student-athletes participate in a day of study and service in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The Dragons' student-athletes participated in community clean-up service projects at 12 locations throughout the West Philadelphia community, including the Tiffany Fletcher Community Center, Aspen Farms, Transfiguration Church, Mantua Urban Peace Garden, the Clara Muhammad School, the New Africa Center, Calvary Chapel and New River Presbyterian Church.
Student-athletes gathered at the Daskalakis Athletic Center at 8:30 a.m. and were welcomed by Drexel Director of Athletics Maisha Kelly and Youngmoo Kim, Drexel's Vice Provost for University and Community Partnerships. They spoke about the history and meaning of Dr. King's legacy and Drexel's commitment to civic engagement. After warming up with coffee and hot chocolate, the volunteers headed out despite the cold temperatures to help make their mark on the local community.
Volunteers from Drexel participate in service activities each year on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service. The 2024 Community Clean-Up Day was presented by Spark Therapeutics. This year's efforts were in partnership with the West Philadelphia Promise Neighborhood, the Mantua Civic Association, the Community Alliance for Development and Drexel's Undergraduate Student Government Association.
"As we continue to grow our annual MLK Day of Service, it's great to see the intentional impact Drexel athletics is making on the community," said Peaches Brown, Drexel's Assistant Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Development. "Our athletes and staff engaged in positive conversations with the West Philly Promise Neighborhood partners and contributed to enhancing need-based areas. I look forward to our future events."
