PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel women's tennis team opened its spring season with a 7-0 victory against Rider on Friday afternoon.
Drexel jumped out to an early lead after sweeping the doubles point. Lorie Lemongo and Renata Lombera took the top-seeded match, 6-1, while Elisa Rigazio and Maddie Ricardo took down their opponents in the No. 2 match by the same score. In the third-seeded match, Adva Dabah and Rebecca Fiedler downed their opponents, 7-5.
In singles play, Rigazio finished her third-seeded match to earn Drexel its second point, 6-2, 6-0. Lombera took care of business in the No. 2 match, 6-1, 6-3 to push Drexel's lead to three. The clincher was had by Lemongo, who earned the victory over the 116th ranked player by the ITA, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3).
Isabel Cabrerizo earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory in the fourth-seeded match. Dabah earned the first collegiate victory of her career with a 6-1, 6-3 final score in the No. 5 singles match, and Ricardo blanked her opponent in the sixth-seeded match, 6-0, 6-0 to finish the shutout for the Dragons.
Drexel returns to action on Saturday, January 27. The Dragons travel to Bethlehem, Pa. to face the Lehigh Mountain Hawks at noon.
