PHILADELPHIA - Temple held off a Drexel second-half rally to defeat the Dragons, 69-61, at the Liacouras Center in North Philadelphia on Tuesday. It was the opener of Big 5 pod play for each team. Kobe Magee scored 17 points and Cole Hargrove had his first career double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds.
Temple (3-0) took a 55-44 lead with 11:39 to go in the game after a Drexel (2-1) turnover led to a dunk by Quante Berry. That made it 55-44 and forced Drexel into calling a timeout. The Dragons answered by scoring eight straight points. Hargrove started the run with a 3-pointer and Shane Blakeney quickly added another. When Hargrove scored in the paint at the 8:23 mark, the Dragons trailed by just three. Unfortunately for the visitors, they were unable to get the lead down to a possession the rest of the way.
The teams played a tightly contested first half, with six lead changes and five ties. Zion Stanford had a huge first half for the Owls. He scored 19 of Temple's points and was 7-for-8 from the floor. The Owls led by as many as seven, but Drexel kept the game within striking distance. Yame Butler scored 11 of his 13 points in the first half.
Drexel came into the game shooting well from both the floor and from deep, but struggled against the Owls. The Dragons shot just 34 percent from the floor and managed to make only seven of their 33 3-point attempts.
MaGee led the Dragons in scoring for the second straight night. He had three 3-pointers, all coming in the second half. Hargrove had an impressive night. The junior had seven of his 12 rebounds on the offensive end and shot 7-for-12 from the field. Drexel had a good night on the boards, grabbing five more than Temple and finishing with 17 on the offensive glass.
Stanford led the Owls with 23 points. Jamal Mashburn, Jr. finished with 20 points and played all 40 minutes. The Owls spent a good deal of the night at the foul line, sinking 21 of their 31 attempts.
The Dragons continue pod play in the Big 5 this weekend at the Daskalakis Athletic Center, Drexel will host La Salle on Saturday at 2 p.m.
