
Men's Swimming and Diving Wins Silver on Night One of CAA Championships

HAMPTON, Va. – Dimi Gkelis, Kacper Karnik, Jakub Kwasny and Sebastian Smith earned the Drexel men's swimming and diving team its first medal of the 2024 CAA Championships on Wednesday night at the Hampton Aquaplex in Hampton, Va.
The Dragons captured their first silver medal of the four-day championship in the 200 medley relay. Gkelis, Karnik, Kwasny and Smith teamed up and swam a 1:25.25 to finish second behind Delaware by just under a second. The time also set a program record set by Alasdair Bell, Karnik, Smith and John Scully at last year's CAA Championships.
After the 200 medley relay, Drexel competed in the 1-meter diving event. Jack Patton led the Dragons, scoring a 235.70 to place seventh.
In the final event of the night, Drexel placed fourth in the 800 free relay. Andrea Casini, Kaan Akdag, Mohammed ElTayeb and Alessio Gianni paced their entry time by 9.57 seconds to post a 6:36.68 swim.
The Dragons finished night one in fourth place with 89 points. Leading the way is UNCW with 114 points. Competition continues Thursday with the 500 free, 200 medley relay, 50 free and 400 medley relay. Prelims begin at 10 a.m. The finals will kick off from the Hampton Aquaplex at 6 p.m. The entirety of the 2024 CAA Swimming and Diving Championships, including preliminaries, will be streamed on FloSwimming.
