Amari Williams Named as Finalist for Lefty Driesell Defensive Player of the Year

PHILADELPHIA - Amari Williams of Drexel Men's Basketball has been named a finalist for the Lefty Driesell Defensive Player of the Year award. The honor is presented annually to the best defensive player in Division I college basketball. Williams was also recently named All-Region.
The award is named after legendary coach Lefty Driesell, who coached 41 years and won 786 games at Davidson, Maryland, James Madison and Georgia State. The recipient of the annual award is determined by a ten member voting committee, which consists of current and former head coaches, as well as two senior staff members of collegeinsider.com. Williams is one of 25 student-athletes to be recognized.
The Nottingham, England native, finished the 2023-24 season with his third consecutive CAA Defensive Player of the Year award. Williams led the CAA in blocks for the third straight year with 1.8 a game and finished fifth in rebounds at 7.8 per game. The senior finished his career as a Dragon with 186 blocks, which is fifth all-time in program history. Williams is also 13th all time in rebounds with 732. Williams was selected to the CAA's First Team the last two seasons, voted by the league's coaches.
The Dragons finished the season with a 20-12 record, ending the year against Stony Brook in the CAA Quarterfinals in Washington, D.C.
