PHILADELPHIA - Members of Drexel's Athletic teams participated in Read Across America on March 2. The event was planned in partnership with Drexel's Vice-President of University & Community Partnership.
Drexel had more than 30 student-athletes participate in reading to four schools in the West Philadelphia Promise Zone. The kindergarten through third-grade classes at Alain Locke, Blankenburg, McMichael and Belmont Charter were read to and talked to about the importance of reading and literature. Student-athletes from cheerleading and dance, golf, field hockey, men's and women's rowing and women' soccer read a number of books to the students, including Running for the Golf by Jackie Joyner-Kersee. The former Olympian participated in Vidas Field Day last fall.
"Uniting the power of sport with the joy of learning, our student-athletes come together to inspire young minds through the magic of storytelling," said Peaches Brown, Drexel's Assistant Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Development. "It's not just about reading words, it's about building bridges and nurturing dreams. We look forward to continue building the bridge to our local schools"
