Williams Also Selected All-CAA First Team, Justin Moore Named to the Third Team
PHILADELPHIA – Amari Williams was named the Coastal Athletic Association's Defensive Player of the Year for a record third time. Williams was also named to the CAA's First Team for the second straight season in a vote by the league's coaches. In addition, sophomore Justin Moore was named a Third Team All-CAA selection.
Williams was a big reason the Dragons finished second in the CAA this year. The senior from Nottingham, England led the CAA in blocked shots for the third straight season averaging 1.81 per game. The Dragons have now had a CAA Defensive Player of the Year in seven of the 23 seasons they have been in the league.
Williams averaged 12.3 points per game and 7.8 rebounds this season, which was fifth in the league. He enters play this weekend fifth all-time at Drexel with 185 blocked shots. Williams is now 13th on Drexel's career rebounding list with 726. He became just the 40th Drexel player to score 1,000 career points earlier this season and is now 34th on the school's career scoring list with 1,076 points.
Moore has emerged as one of the top point guards in the CAA. The Philadelphia native led the team in scoring (12.6), assists (3.4) and steals (1.1). Moore poured in a career-high 34 points at Bryant and closed the regular season by scoring 20 or more points in two of his final three games. In conference games, Moore shot 36 percent from deep and had a better than 2-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio.
Drexel will begin play in the CAA Championship Quarterfinals on Sunday evening in Washington, D.C. The Dragons will be the second seed after finishing the regular season with a 13-5 CAA record. They will play against either Northeastern or Stony Brook at 6 p.m. at the Entertainment and Sports Arena.
