PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel women's basketball team defeated the Chestnut Hill Griffins, 95-38 on Tuesday afternoon in the Daskalakis Athletic Center. Iriona Gravley finished with a career-high of 23 points and shot a near-perfect 10-for-11 from the field.
BY THE NUMBERS
Drexel set a program record on Tuesday, after defeating the Griffins by 57 points. That mark is the widest victory margin in program history, topping Drexel's 95-43 victory against Philadelphia Textiles on December 8, 1986.
It is the first time the Dragons scored more than 90 points since the Dragons scored 98 points against Northeastern on January 28, 2010. It is just the fourth time that the Dragons have scored more than 90 points in regulation in program history. The last time Drexel scored north of 90 points in regulation was on January 23, 2004, against William & Mary.
It is the first time that Drexel corralled more than 50 rebounds since the team grabbed 51 rebounds against Rider on December 29, 2003.
The team finished with 30 assists, two shy of the program's record. It is the highest assist total since the team finished with 28 against Charleston on March 12, 2022.
In addition to Gravley's 23 points, the sophomore finished with six rebounds.
Amaris Baker finished the game with a game-high 26 points with four rebounds. It is the seventh 20-point game for Baker, who finished with 10 field goals for the third time this season.
Deja Evans continued her high-powered play against Chestnut Hill, scoring 13 points on 6-for-7 shooting. Evans also grabbed four rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Seven points by Evans helped the Dragons open the game on a 16-2 run across five minutes of play. Evans' fourth bucket of the afternoon caused the Griffins to call their first timeout of the game. Drexel scored 10 more points and held Chestnut Hill to just seven in the first 10 minutes to take a 26-7 lead into the second quarter.
The Dragons widened their lead with a 24-point second quarter to push their lead to 29 points after holding Chestnut Hill to just 14 points. Seven of the 10 Dragons who entered play in the second quarter scored points. Baker led the team in scoring, finishing with eight points in the frame.
Drexel's offense did not slow in the third quarter. The Dragons chipped in 24 points on 8-for-14 shooting from the field. Baker paced the Dragons once more with nine points and was followed by Gravley, who finished the quarter with five. Drexel took a 74-28 lead into the final frame.
