
Golf Tied For Fifth Place After Opening Round in CAA Championship

SWAINTON, N.J. – The Drexel golf team opened the CAA Championship on Sunday morning on the Jersey Shore. The Dragons finished the opening round at 13-over par and will head into the second round tied for fifth place.
Graduate student Griffin Mitchell, playing in his final CAA Championship, led the squad with a 1-under-par 71. Mitchell had six birdies, which tied for the most on day one. John Keba, making his first postseason appearance for the Dragons, carded a 2-over-par 74. Keba came on strong late with birdies on three of the final four holes. Caleb Taylor shot a 77, while Drue Nicholas finished at 7-over par.
For the first time since the Dragons joined the CAA prior to the 2002 spring season, the championship is being played north of Virginia. The Union League National Golf Club is hosting for the first time. The par-72 course is playing 7,274 yards for the 54-hole tournament that continues on Monday morning and concludes on Tuesday.
The Dragons are tied with UNCW for fifth place at 13-over par. Campbell and Delaware are currently tied for first at 4-over par. Defending champion Charleston is one shot behind, while Elon is six strokes ahead of Drexel.
Campbell's Henric Bjelke has the individual lead after the first round. He finished with a 7-under par 65. Casper Nerpin of Delaware was second at 68.
Second round play begins on Tuesday morning.
