Women’s Varsity 8+ Takes Gold at Jefferson Dad Vail Regatta; Dragons Take Overall Championship

CHERRY HILL, N.J. - The women's varsity 8+ won gold in the Grand Final of the Jefferson Dad Vail Regatta on the Cooper River Saturday morning. The Dragons have taken the trophy in back-to-back seasons. Both the women's and men's program collected the overall for the second consecutive season. The 2V8+ boat also captured gold as all five teams competed in Grand Finals.
The V8+ team of Lauren Shaw (Coxswain), Emily Ellis (Stroke), Ellen McCallin, Margaret Dobrenko, Hannah Walseth, Taylor Powell, Colette Zidek, Baylor Henry, and Sabrina Batdorf (Bow) sank the boats from Georgetown and St. Joseph's at the finish line. The Dragons, rowing in Jim & Toni Downey, lead the entire race as the Hoyas and Hawks trailed close behind. Drexel was able to collect the win by a nose with a time of 6:38.387, 6/10 of a second ahead of Georgetown.
The 2V8+ team cruised to victory in Alleva XVII, posted their best time of the season at 6:41.086. Erin Ernst (Coxswain), Ariana Townsend (Stroke), Sarah Ghazaz, Maggie Horgan, Fiona Steele, Lila Seidenberg, Kieran Harrington, Lauren Boyce, and Grace Conroy (Bow). Drexel finished over six seconds ahead of the team from Georgetown.
The Dragons will battle for a CAA Championship on the Cooper River May 16-17.
